Are you a writer in the NYC area
(or nearby enough that you're
willing to take the train/drive in and
entertain our audience)?  Are you
looking for a great promotion
opportunity?  Are you free at 6PM
on either the first or the third
Sunday of the month in 2006
(We're booked through 2005)?  If
so, Barbes is a great place to
read.  The Barbes Reading Series
is now taking reader applications
for '05-'06.  Guidelines are below.
* We welcome fiction, non-fiction, monologue, essay, whatever, as long as you'll
have a great time reading it and will keep the audience entertained.  Unless
you're thinking of keeping the audience entertained for more than fifteen
minutes, because then we won't like you anymore.  If you're not sure how long
your piece is, a double-spaced page of prose takes about a minute and a half
to read.  If you're still not sure, time yourself reading it out loud and cut
accordingly.

* We encourage all kinds of writers in the NYC area to submit their writing for
consideration for our series. Whether you're on the New York Times bestseller
list or have never been published, if we like it, we'd like you to read it at Barbes.
Our series strives to provide a mix of styles and experience levels at each
reading.

* You can bring whatever you want to pass out to the audience: promotional
bookmarks/postcards, food, maxi pads, nothing at all, etc.

Please send the following information to barbesreadingseries at robynschneider
dot com with the subject line "Barbes Reading Series":

* Your name, age (ballpark figures okay), city you live in

* Publication history (just give me an idea whether you're ALA notable or
cultivating your first WIP)

* Where, if anywhere, have you read before?

* Word document containing the piece you'd like to read, OR, if you would like
to read from your book, tell us the name, genre, and publisher of your book.

* Any dates you'd prefer to read on/dates you're unavailable (starting from 9/18)

* Any ideas on what you'd like to do to make your reading stand out?  Do you
have writer friends you'd want to read with?  Something cool you'd like to do?
(note on gimmicks:  We at Barbes do not like "gimmicks."  Serving cookies with
your beer is weird enough without having some guy wheezing into a harmonica
on stage whilst Nairing dirty words into his exposed chicken legs.)
